All about the two Egyptian Eyes: Eye of Horus and Eye of RA
The Ancient Egyptians were deeply symbolic, and two ancient symbols have stood the test of time, the two Egyptian Eyes.
The ancient Egyptians were a profoundly spiritual, advanced, and innovative civilization along the Nile River for thousands of years. Their culture was defined by grand symbolism and a deep connection to spiritual beliefs, the cosmos, kingship, Divinity, and the afterlife. They worshipped a pantheon of deities, each representing cosmic principles, natural forces, and/or the human experience. The ancient Egyptian architectures, such as the Pyramids of Giza, were not only feats of advanced engineering but also sacred with cosmic alignments.
Otherworldliness defines their worldview. The Ancient Egyptians were deeply symbolic and two ancient symbols have stood the test of time; everything you need to know about the two Egyptian Eyes: Eye of Horus and Eye of RA. Both symbols have been used for thousands of years.

The Egyptian Eyes
The Eye of Horus is also known as the wadjet or wedjat eye, the udjat eye, the whole one, the Third Eye, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Egyptian Eye. The Eye of Horus is often confused with the Eye of RA, also known as the eye of truth, and the Daughter of RA. Together, the two eyes are called “The Egyptian Eyes” or “The Eyes”, representing balance with the moon as (Horus) and the sun as (RA). If you look closely at the two symbols, the bottom “tuck” distinguishes the two symbols from each other.
History
The Eye of Horus
The Eye of Horus is connected to the story of Horus, the falcon-headed god and one of the key gods of the Egyptian pantheon. The story tells of Horus’s battle with his uncle god Seth (Set), who killed Horus’s father, god Osiris. During their battle, Seth gouged out Horus’s eye. god Thoth, the god of wisdom, knowledge, and magic, restored the eye, symbolizing healing and wholeness. Horus offered the restored eye to his father to bring him back to life, symbolizing regeneration and protection.
The Eye of RA
god RA is the father of all existence and the monarch of the gods. The sun, heaven, sovereignty, power, authority, and light were all about him. The Eye of RA is symbolic of authority, kingship, pharaohship, destruction, wrath, the Divine One, and Divine protection. In the story, RA sends his “eye” in the form of powerful goddesses (Sekhmet or Hathor) to protect cosmic order and/or punish those who defy Divine authority.

About the Eye of Horus
The Eye of Horus is one of the most popular symbols in ancient Egypt. Worn by the living as a symbol of Divine protection from all evil, good health, restoration, and healing. Also found in artifacts, wall decorations, jewelry, household items, tools, and weapons. The udjat is depicted as a human eye and eyebrow, and the lines underneath correspond to a falcon’s eye. The All-Seeing Eye is associated with the Divine and spiritual vision. It corresponds to the location of the Third Eye, represented by the sixth chakra. The sixth chakra represents intuition and the ability to “see” all things, usually that which is hidden.
Buried with the deceased in burial sites, in the Book of the Dead, the Eye of Horus is a symbol of protection of the soul during the journey through the afterlife and a guide through the underworld.

About the Eye of RA
The Eye of RA is associated with the sun god, RA or RE, representing the sun, power, protection, wrath, the destructive aspects of Divine Energy, and the All-Seeing Gaze. The Eye of RA was worn on jewelry, talismans, and amulets. Found on doorways and entrances of temples and depicted in carvings, inscriptions, and temple walls meant to invoke kingship protection and Divine favor. Also worn on jewelry, talismans, and amulets.
Pharaohs used the Eye of RA as a form of defense against enemies, perhaps as an ancient weapon for Divine protective power. The Eye of RA is found in Egyptian religion, including the cults of many goddesses and temples dedicated to gods and goddesses. The symbol was celebrated in temple rituals, and its dangerous aspects were invoked in the protection of the pharaoh.

The Eyes and Fractions
The Egyptians used Heqat or hekat fractions as a measuring unit for grains and flour. Each part of the Eye represents a fraction (1/2, 1/8, 1/16, etc.), adding up to form the whole Eye. It has been suggested that each part of the eye represents one of the six senses: smell, sight, thought, hearing, taste, and touch. This mathematical completeness links the Eye to cosmic harmony, balance, and connection to the Divine.
The Modern World
Today, the Egyptian Eyes: Eye of Horus and Eye of Ra remain a popular motif in spiritual and metaphysical contexts. Both are still used in jewelry and talismans, tattoos, and other forms of art and spiritual practices as emblems of intuition, insight, protection, and awareness. While the ancient symbols appear similar, they have distinct meanings, origins, and deities. Understanding their differences can shed light on the philosophies and beliefs of ancient Egypt. They serve as powerful reminders of the dualities present and continue to be two of the most used symbols of ancient Egypt.
