Traditionally, Ma\u2019at is depicted as feminine with an ostrich feather on her head and sometimes with wings. Her ostrich feather represents truth, morality, justice, balance, and harmony. Ma\u2019at is the principle governing all aspects of life, society, and the Universe. The ancients believed Ma\u2019at was the force keeping the universe balanced and by doing this; society, the Pharaoh\u2019s ruling of the land, and the afterlife were all able to function properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ma&#8217;at and the Feather<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrikaiswoke.com\/kemetic-spirituality-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ancient Kemetic beliefs<\/a>, once a person dies, their heart is weighed against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhistory.org\/Ma%27at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the feather of Ma\u2019at<\/a> at the afterlife judgment. If the heart was lighter than the feather, they would be admitted to the paradise of the afterlife. If a person\u2019s heart weighed more than a feather, a beast named <a href=\"https:\/\/kids.britannica.com\/students\/article\/Ammit\/309834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ammut (or Ammit<\/a>), consumed the heart banishing them from the afterlife. A light heart was considered joyous and good-spirited. A heavy heart was considered chaotic and evil-spirited. Ma\u2019at was intimately linked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyhit.com\/facts-about-the-pharaohs-of-ancient-egypt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pharaoh<\/a>, as it was the Pharaoh\u2019s duty to preserve Ma\u2019at and uphold order within society.
