The ancient ruins of the Mayan City of Palenque are located in Southern Mexico, established around 1800 B.C. Palenque was a key city of the ancient Mayan civilization, which dominated present-day Central America for almost two thousand years. In spite of being surrounded by the jungle, this ancient civilization managed to build a functional city. Although the soil makes it difficult, the Mayans were able to support a huge population roughly 30 times the current population of the area. Scholars have deemed the Mayan civilization to be the most complex and sophisticated in ancient history with advanced achievements in astronomy, architecture, agriculture, and engineering. Time and celestial events were very important to them. According to historians, by the 9th century, the people vanished and the cities were abandoned. One thing of high importance that was left behind is the controversial Sarcophagus of The Mayan Lord Pakal.

A very young Mayan Lord King Pakal ruled Palenque between 615 and 683. As a result of Lord Pakal's efforts, one of the most important cities of that period was transformed from a destroyed city into one of the most important. The inscriptions and monuments he left behind are among the most significant in ancient Mayan civilization.

The Temple of Inscriptions, the most famous pyramid in Mayan history, began excavations in 1948. King Pakal's tomb has a famous staircase, made of stones and dirt, which descends to the depths of the pyramid. In the pyramid, Lord Pakal's tomb is adorned with an enormous sarcophagus lid. There is perhaps no other artifact as controversial and important as the Mayan artifact found here. You can ask 100 people what they see when they look at it and everyone may have a different view.

According to the Founder and Godfather of THE ANCIENT ASTRONAUT THEORY, Erich von Däniken…

(i) Pictorial evidence: rock art, cave art, hieroglyphics, etc

(ii) Artifacts, Archaeological: monuments, pyramids, structures, astronomical sites, etc

(iii) and Sacred Texts, religious texts, etc

There has been much controversy regarding what is actually depicted on the lid of Lord Pakal's stone sarcophagus. According to mainstream scholars, the depiction shows him on a journey into the Underworld upon his death.

Ancient Astronaut Theorists believe the King is seated at the controls of a spacecraft and refer to him as the “Palenque Astronaut” or “The original Rocketman.”

Ancient Astronaut Theorists believe the King is seated at the controls of a spacecraft and has dubbed him, “The Palenque Astronaut” or “The original Rocketman.” Ancient Astronaut Theorists are from diverse backgrounds, including religious cultures, and believe extraterrestrials have visited Earth for millions of years and helped shape us into what we are today and what we will become.

According to Ancient Astronaut Theorists, Lord Pakal’s lid, depicts him going into space in his spacecraft. Furthermore, the depiction is of the King sitting in a cockpit at an angle upon liftoff, manipulating some controls with a breathing apparatus or telescope in front of his face. His feet look to be on a pedal and at the bottom, it looks like an exhaust with flames.
